The Jewish community in Portugal and Lisbon has a great history dating back to the Roman occupation. During the Inquisition Period, a few Jews escaped and continued to practice their faith clandestinely. This led to the emergence of Crypto-Jews, also known as Marranos, who managed to preserve Judaism while appearing to be Catholic.
The Lisbon Synagogue is considered one of the oldest and most significant landmarks in the city and is a testament to the rich history of Jewish people in this region. Today, Lisbon’s Jewish community continues to thrive and plays an important role in preserving its unique heritage.
Participants will gain insight into the life, culture, and history of this community, as well as their impact on the development of the city.
Our tour is sure to be memorable experience for all those interested in learning more about the Jewish community in Lisbon.
