Heading to the pilgrim site of Fátima, located northeast of Lisbon, the first thing the visitors look at is the colossal size of the square, surrounded by magnificent architecture, to celebrate a unique moment, announced as "The Apparitions of Fátima". It is a place of peace and introspection where emotions and thoughts are revealed.
Then the tour reaches Nazaré, a place where pilgrims visit the image of the Virgin Mary from Nazaré and now famous for the biggest waves in the world, where many professional surfers risk their lives searching for the perfect wave. This town witnesses today an impressive fusion of cultures where a distant past interacts in a unique way with the present, making it a case study in a country where its cosmopolitanism was once decisive for its growth.
Óbidos is the next destination. It is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in Europe. Here you can see the castle and the town surrounded by a wall that served to protect the way of living of the communities in the Middle Ages and an extensive work of carved art. It was occupied by Romans, Visigoths, and Mozarabs, but opened a new chapter when it was conquered by the first king of Portugal, in 1148.
