Porto was called Portus Cale in Roman times and was earlier a flourishing settlement on the Douro River. Christian forces recaptured Porto, which became the capital city of the Counts of Portucale for a time before being formally declared the city of Porto in 1187.
The city's location along the Douro River was key to its development as a port and centre for maritime trade. Its historical landmarks include the ancient Roman bridges, the Ponte Dom Luis I, and the Serra do Pilar Viewpoint, which offers breath-taking views of the cityscape.
UNESCO was so impressed with its patrimonial importance that it classified this part of downtown Porto as a World Heritage Site in 1996, stating that the city’s harmonious architecture, embedded in the hills that overlook the Douro River, reflects a unique cosmopolitan and multicultural character.
After lunch, we will stop by a PORTO WINE CELLAR for a wine tasting and, if you would like, a tour on a small boat down the DOURO river (entrance fees not included). The trip back to Lisbon provided us with the perfect amount of time to reflect on what we had seen during our brief visit to Porto.
